Workout Songs of the Week:Nicki Minaj, T.I., Kanye West, & J-Cole

November 17th, 2010 No comments

This represents the second week in a row where Nicki Minaj makes one of the Workout Songs of the Week, for an artist I am not particularly fond of this is quite disturbing. Her lyrical talent and word play is undeniable but she lacks content like a bad website. She raps about absolutely nothing for the most part, and her attempts to show some depth come off as formulaic. However, she rides a beat like a Harley and her delivery is enough to keep me interested. This track titled “Blazin” is off her Pink Friday album due out November 22nd.  Minaj teams up with Kanye West for a wonderfully produced track and her lyrical delivery is solid and makes the song a good track to listen to while working out.

It seems like T.I.’s album has been anticipated since forever. All She Wrote featuring Eminem is a track off his upcoming album No Mercy due out December 7th.  Before I listened to this song I expected for Eminem to completely embarrass T.I. at least more than he usually embarrasses himself in his personal life. The two combine to make a pretty dope track over the snare and guitar mingled track. Eminem murders the track like an assassin a smooth calm collected flow that makes you realize he is the best rapper of last two decades.

I have the Kanye West album downloaded already but I refuse to listen to it simply because if I do I will never buy the album. I really like Kanye as an artist. His talent is undeniable and the fact that he is probably not mentally stable is also undeniable. Despite that his production skills continue to evolve and he has become a very respectable lyricist.  All of the Lights featuring Rihanna and a gaggle of other artists is a track worthy of a Grammy, and supposedly its not the best track on his album.  Kanye uses a crescending   flow over the trumpet and congo  inspired track to make song that can only be described as epic. I cant even describe it fully you have to listen to the song itself, its crazy.

I saved the best for last. If you follow the blog you know that I have a man crush on J. Cole. I think he’s one of the best things to happen to hip-hop in a long time.  Last Friday he released his highly anticipated mixtape Friday Night Lights. Between this and Wale’s Mixtape About Nothing you have the two of the best releases in hip-hop this year. J.Cole always comes hungry on every track, he spits every line like its his last, and he has the unique ability to appeal to the shallowness of most hip-hop fans while being thought provoking. The mixtape is available for download at www.datpiff.com or through that thing called Google.

Workout Songs of The Week -The Dream X Eminem x The Game

June 9th, 2010 No comments

First off, I have to apologize, I’ve been slacking on my blog posting, diet, but Ive been doing good with working out. I probably need to start getting my body ready for Miami, I think 3 weeks will be enough.

This album releases January 22nd...I might buy two copies.

The first song comes from  Terius Nash also known as the The Dream. It’s undeniable that Mr. Nash is talented and can make hits. His claim of being the “Radio Killer” is well founded. In one of his songs he claims that everyone is the enemy, with the way he works I think he really believes that.  “Makeup Bag” featuring T.I. is the second single off of his upcoming album Love King. I don’t even know what a make-up bag is but I better be dating Meghan Foxx if I drop “5 stacks on a make-up bag”. These two make a dynamic duo, I don’t think they have a song together that I don’t like. Another song off the album “Fall In Love Again”, is a banger that I like for personal reason.

Eminem is back and nobody is  safe. I am refusing to  listen to the album though Ive had it since Monday. I want to buy it and support music. I’m trying to remember the last CD I bought before the Cudi and Wale albums and it may have been Ruff Ryders Vol. 1. Eminem teams up with Pink on “Wont Back Down” and absolutely murders the track. I don’t believe the argument is whether or not Mr. Mathers is one of the best rappers ever, the question is whether or not he is the best ever. Jay-Z your services are no longer needed Mr. Mathers has returned. Go have some kids and enjoy your money

I liked the game at one point but then I realized he name drops like an insecure female. However he does have an ear for production and he is a respectable rapper. He teams up with T.I. ( Post Jail- He is rapping like he has something to prove), and Robin Thicke whose wife is in my Top 10 to make the track “Pushin It” on.  The song has really nice production and Robin Thicke only does good things for the track. (Side Note : I saw him back in March in Concert and he puts on a good show.) This is a  really good track to lift to. Is it just me or does Game sound like Nas on this track?  Game raps “I’m trying to get to know you mentally before physically. Lol, yeah right!

Workout Songs of the Week – Wale, J.Cole, T.I, and B.O.B.

Workout Songs of the Week – These are just a couple of songs I’ve added to the ipod in the last week or so. Hip-Hop is so crazy right now… i don’t even have time or desire to listen to anything else right now. So many good & “new ” artists and the resurgence of Eminem just makes me toes tingle (that sounds kind of weird…pause)

Album In Stores 4/27/2010...Support Good Music

Wale – Kini Big Deal

Admittedly, I am probably the worst Nigerian on the face of the earth. I speak Spanish about 10 times more fluently than I can speak Yoruba.  However, this song manages to almost make me feel 100% Nigerian, something that 24 odd years of jellof rice, fried plantain, and slave whippings couldn’t do.As a matter of fact I said “Kini big deal?”  to my dad, and he looked at me like I was retarded. My Nigerian accent is that bad. The song title basically translates to “What’s the big deal?”, and Wale goes in showcasing not only his incredible lyricism but also his piss poor accent and pronunciation of the Yoruba language. Despite all that this song goes, and will definitely get spins this summer at your local Nigerian party.

T.I.-  I’m Back

T.I. is back and it looks like the year in prison has done him some good. T.I. has always had the mic presence but his last few songs and features he has displayed a passion and lyricism I didn’t think he had. On this track he reminds all of us with short memories that he is to be respected in this hip hop game.  On top of that he is showing some versatility with his flow. The fact that he is married to Tiny is the only knock against him.  Regardless the Kaaaang is back!!!

J-Cole -Who Dat?

Pretty sure this is my favorite rapper right now, and it is int even close. He just comes so hard on every track. I don’t really like the beat on this song, but J. Cole is one of the few artists who is so nice with his lyrics that he can rhyme on Idleweiss from Sound of Music, and it would still sound sick. I can’t wait till his album drops

B.O.B. – Airplanes Pt. 2 feat. Eminem & Hayley Williams

I don’t even know where to start with this song. The original was a great track but this right here, this right here, right here, is going to be a Grammy Award winning song. In the first two verses B.O.B. ponders the negative effects of stardom and how it has and will change him and the people around him. Eminem jumps in on the third verse, and defecates all over the song. I mean B.O.B.’s verses were admirable but Eminem drops one of the greatest verses in hip-hop history ( I have absolutely nothing to base this on.) The thing about it is not even Eminem’s delivery or his lyrics, it is his ability to weave his personal pain into his lyrics. Eminem just doesn’t rap he paints lyrical portraits, and its a gift very few rappers have.  Song is just effing awesome. Also buy the B.O.B. album- Adventures of Bobby Ray…its a very good debut album.
