First off I would like to apologize for my absence, I haven’t posted since February 14th.  These annoying things called life, career, Kerry Washington stalking, and MBA applications got in the way of my updating the sight as frequently as I would like. However, that is all in the past and I can now continue with the regularly scheduled program.

This is like the bat signal for fat people.


So as you may have guessed by the title of this post I am back in school at Duke getting my MBA.  Despite hating reading and math, I’m pretty sure it will be much better than spending another year in public accounting.

Don’t Worry Terp Fans. Duke may pay me but Maryland raised me!

 Attending Duke presents a couple of unique opportunities for myself. The three most important ones as I see it are:

 1. To really expand the content and offerings of jimgetsslim.com and  put my personal trainer talents to good use and integrate that with the website. Hopefully if time permits we can see more videos (sorry guys Susan doesn’t live in Durham)

2. A chance to do college a bit differently. The last time I went to college I gained the freshman 50 (not fifteen) and I probably went to class about as frequently as a solar eclipse. I’m going to try and do things a little bit differently and try to balance going to class and being an ass. Hopefully this time around, I can lose weight and not add it.

3. Develop as a leader. For some reason people have always identified me as a leader. Though for the most part I have shied away from that role for a couple of reasons. Leadership often involves politics, and for the most part I hate politics. Second, I hate taking responsibility for the success of others. Often times I find that those who aspire to be leaders seldom understand the consequences of leadership. Leadership is more than a title its a lifestyle. Finally, being a clown is way easier than being Mr. Serious all the time.

Now that I have sufficiently bored you guys enough. I just want to say to look for more interesting articles, and tidbits in the coming weeks as I get back into the groove of blogging…


Valentines Day–A perfect time to love yourself

February 14th, marks the annual celebration of the St. Valentines Holiday. Apparently he was some martyr back during the Roman Empire. I really dont care and its not pertinent to the subject of this post I just felt like throwing it in there. As millions of America spend time with their significant others tomorrow, many others will be all alone curled up in their snuggies, watchhing the Notebook, chogging down ice cream, while crying their little hearts away. Other Americans will be trying to find love in a bar, and instead finding a painful yet curable venereal disease. However I digress, again.

Love isnt dead, just deeply wounded...

If you find yourself all alone this Valentines Day, it is a perfect opportunity to love yourself, and get into the best physical condition that you can. I truly believe that if you love yourself you will take care of your body and stay in shape. When you take the time to invest in your well-being others will be more likely to take the time to invest in you. None of this Oprah Winfrey loving your curves and rolls nonsense. Love yourself for who you are but strive to be better.

Loving yourself starts with admitting you have a problem. No you don’t have a thyroid, problem and no you’re not big boned, you just lack discipline and focus. Learn to take the weight loss journey one day at a time, Rome wasnt built in a day and neither is a perfectly sculpted body. Start by planning out your meals, counting calories, becoming dedicated to working out frequently, and see if the pounds don’t fly off. So I encourage all of you looking to find love on Valentines Day to look inside and love yourself first, because only then will you be able to love yourself. Or at least that’s what I heard on an after school special.

As for me I will be spending my Valentines day with my boos Kerry Washington and Charlize Theron…

Got Bounce?

I had stupid crazy bounce for 300 lb shooting guard...

For as long as I can remember I’ve always wanted to be able to dunk.  My infatuation with dunking began when my mom purchased my the Reebok Pumps back in the early 90′s unfortunately these shoes failed to provide me with the vertical lift necessary to take my game above the rim.  Neither did the multiple Air Jordan’s I used to collect, talk about a sham. Spike Lee once said “It’s gotta be the shoes!” Well my four eyed brother it aint.

My inability to dunk is frustrating,  besides the fact that I’m 5’11″ on a good day and my arms are short and compact, I should be able to dunk since my calves were designed by the Greek god’s themselves. So part of my new year’s resolution was to try and be able to dunk by June 1′st of this year. Part of that is getting down to 200 lbs im at 215 as of this morning, down 10 lbs from January 1st.  The second Part is Plyometrics.

Plyometrics is a type of exercise training designed to produce fast, powerful movements, and improve the functions of the nervous system. The intended goal of this type of training is to improve athletic performance.  

In plyometrics   a muscle is loaded and contracted in rapid sequence, using  the strength, elasticity and innervation of  the muscle and surrounding tissues to improve athletic performance. The plyometric workout I have recently started using in my own workouts are designed to increase my jumping ability. I actually tried to plyometrics about a year ago, and the results were impressive. I blocked a kid’s lay-up on the backboard. Probably the highlight of my rec-ball career.  Aside from the obvious athletic benefits, Plyometrics have been shown to help reduce injuries in the lower extremeties. After breaking my ankle in 2008, I think I would rather not have sex (not that it matters I’m a virgin) than lose the ability to run and play basketball.

So over the past 3 weeks, Ive changed my leg days to incorporate the flowing

Rapid Lunges- Using a 145 pound barbell I rapidly do lunges alternating my left and right feet.

  • Calf Raisers-Maximum Load-not sure why I do this. It kind of sucks when I buy my straight leg jeans and my calves bulge out the back
  • Weighted Box Jumps- using 25 pound parbells I rapidly jump unto a 36″ box and back down, 3 sets of 10.
  • Power Cleans- The grand-daddy of all dynamic weight lifting. 185 lb power clean 3 reps of 10
  • HIIT Training- To lower my body feight and get me down to my playing weight.

I havent noticed any particular improvement yet but I know it takes time. Hopefully by June 1′st I can dunk and declare for the NBA draft if this whole accounting and MBA thing dont work out.

Dont Let Chubby Charlie become Chubby Charles.

First of all I would like to apologize for my absence, I’ve been busy with work and other things in life. I recently commented to a friend who is a medical student, that my weight fluctuates like crazy. She told me that even though I had lost weight, my body was still prone to gaining and losing weight quickly because I was a chubby charlie as a kid.

Childhood obesity is a dangerous epidemic for a variety of reasons. Children who are obese tend to be more prone to diabetes, heart disease, and a variety of other chronic diseases. But perhaps more shocking is the fact that childhood obesity leads to obese adults.  How does this happen? Fat Cells!

Fat Cells Go To Hell

Fat cells are tricky little buggers, you see they multiply during puberty but unfortunately they don’t die or decrease as you lose weight. Fat cells generally do not generate after puberty, as your body stores fat the cells only get bigger. Instead they shrink in size waiting in the darkness for extra calories to feed on so they can expand. There are exceptions to this though. If an adult gains a significant amount of weight, the  body may produce more fat cells, or lets say the person has liposuction the body will produce more fat cells to supplement the lost ones. That explains why people often gain back the weight after liposuction.

Childhood obesity is not a temporary problem its a lifelong problem, that requires one to be consistently vigilant. That’s why its important for children to get enough exercise and a proper diet in order to prevent childhood obesity. This revelation has inspired me to to donate time and money to organizations focused on preventing childhood obesity through exercise and proper nutrition.

Just My Type Part 3 of 3: The Mesomorph

The last and probably the most desired somatype is that of the mesomorph. A mesomorph typically has a medium to  large large bone structure, large muscles and an athletic physique. Mesomorphs find it easy to gain and lose weight and they are naturally strong individuals. I attribute a lot of my weight loss to the fact that I do have some mesomorph type qualities.

The mesomorph body type responds very well to training. Gains are usually seen very quickly, especially for beginners. However,  mesomorphs can also gain fat more easily than ectomorphs. They have to watch their caloric intake or they can quickly become out of shape. An excellent example of this is Janet Jackson whose weight sees more fluctuation than the stock market.

Male mesomorphs need to focus on keeping their body fat percentage down, as many mesomorphs are prone to weight gain,  even though they lose it fairly easily.  A balanced combo of cardio and weight lifting make the male mesomorph the physical cadillac of men.

Female mesomorphs should focus on weight loss to shrink your waistline with  a regular and efficient cardio routine.  From a weight-lifting perspective they should focus on defining and shaping curves of their  figure.  Due to ther natural propensity to already be musclar their   should be  to create a lot of shape.

From a diet perspective a mesomorph has a little bit more leeway than an endomorph but still has to be careful of what they eat as they can easily put on weight.  A good diet for a mesomorph should be well balanced with 5-7 small meals a day. It is important for mesomorphs to intake sufficent amounts of protein and consume complex carbs preferably in the morning. They should also focus on consuming lean protein and avoid starchy foods and foods high in fat as they are susceptible to unwanted weight gain.

In the last blog post I disussed some of the trait of the endomorph somatype and how they should diet and eat. Now I’m going to take it to the other extreme and dicuss the ectomorph body type.

I'd like to ecto into her morph....

The ectomorph is characterized by long and thin muscles and limbs. They typically have low fat storage and are characterized as being slim. In other words these are the douchebag who can eat whatever they want and never worry about gaining weight. Hopefully, there is a special place in hell reserved for thee fools.

As an ectomorph you are naturally slim, but what if you’re not happy with your frame and you want to bulk up and get ripped? Without the proper diet and exercie you would find it very hard to add any significant muscle gain because your metabolism is naturally high and your body type does not pack on muscles


Ectomorphs should focus on doing heay lifting and avoid too much cardio. Thirty minute of cardio 3 time a week is sufficient to maintain cardiovascular health. As an ectomorph it is important to focus on weightt training. Your workouts should be fairly heavy  in weights and workout pace slower (longer rest periods between sets) a you are trying to build muscle and not definition. Weight training is very important to an extomorph and its recommended that they incorporate strength training into their workout at least 3-4 times a week. It is important to keep your sets low and a pyramid workout scheme is encouraged.


As ane ectomorph you tend to lose weight fairly easily due to your metabolim, but dont be fooled. You’re still susceptible to chronic diease such as diabete and high blood pressure if you’re diet is piss poor. In order to gain muscle an ectomorph must eat a diet high in calories and full of complex carbohydrate and proteins in order to pack on the lean muscle mass and get ripped. It is important that they get more calories from the proper sources in order to fuel their muscle gain

Just My Type… Part 1 of 3.

Rather I am writing about the different types of human body shapes. While all humans are equal some people have more ideal body types for losing weight and maintaining an attractive figure.

When it comes to humans there are three types of body shapes, ectomorph, mesomorph, and endomorph. While most people are a combo of  body types, most fall strongly into one particulary somotype.  So how do the different body types affect how you lose and maintain your weight?  I’ll focus on each body type and explain how they should structure their diet and exercise routines and how to maximize their results.


An  endomorph body type is solid and generally soft. Endomorphs  tend to gain fat easily. The body fat that an endomorph somatotype tends to carry around the midssection (enveloping vital organs) and can potentially be very dangerous to your health. Endomorphs tend to have very strong leg muscles. They also tend to be short and have very thick limbs.  So what does this mean for you if you fall into this category?

As a fellow endomorph, I have insight into what it takes to lose weight as an endomorph. Endomorphs must employ a combo of cardio and weight training and a healthy diet to keep the fat off and the sexy on.


Endomorphs should do low to moderate weight workouts with a high number of repetitions per set. I would tend to recommend doing circuit training and supersets with limited rest time between sets to keep the heart rate elevated and to maximize results. Although endomorphs tend to gain fat easily, they can also develop lean muscle mass rather quickly. The typical endomorph should lift weights 2-3 times a week while supplementing their workout with cardio routines 3-4 times a week.


It is important for an endomorph to eat regulary and drink lots of water since their metabolism are naturally slower than the 2 other body types.

Additionally, endomorphs should avoid carb snacks and deep fried foods because they end up going straight to your belly, thighs and backside. I know some people would like that but there is a thin line between a phat ass and a fat ass and some of you have crossed it and dont even know it.

It is imperative that an endomorph eat foods high in protein because they provide long lasting energy and they assist in losing fat and gaining muscle. They should also limit their complex carb intake to the first half of the day, because their bodies tend to hang on to carbs and store them as fat.

Although being an endomorph is tough when it comes to realizing your ideal physique, a little bit of discipline, hard work, and focus,  can help you achieve your ideal body type.

Bikram Yoga: A Hot Sweaty Milf Utopia…

I have been meaning to improve my flexibility for the longest time.  In my younger days,  I was pretty flexible and would bet people on my ability to do a split. I mean not many guys who are 300 plus pounds can do a split (see photographic evidence below)

Additionally, I have tweaked my right knee and it has inhibited my performance both on and off the court, and a little bit of added flexibility could come in handy in other places, like my weekly horizontal limbo classes. Besides,  being in a  hot room with tons of attractive women in their 20′s and 30′s cant be a bad thing, right?

Sweaty, Wrinkled, White, Men Optional.

On  Monday afterwork, I took my coworker up on her long-standing offer to go do Bikram Yoga at a studio not too far from where I work.  For those of you who dont know what Bikram Yoga is (I’m assuming everyone knows what yoga is), its a system of yoga derived  from traditional yoga techniques. The classes run exactly 90 minutes and consist of a set series of 26 postures and 2 breathing exercises in a room that is about 105 degrees Fahrenheit.

I had no idea what to expect and about 15 minutes into the class, I thought I was going to die and my shirt was drenched like I had run through a fire hose. I had no idea stretching could be so intense.  At the end of the class I was exhausted but felt great, and its something I will incorporate into my workouts. Not to mention that while my class had a couple of  Chunky Carla, and Thunder Thigh Thelmas, there was quite a bit of eye candy. Lets give it up for  hot white women in their mid 20′s.  I think thats the only reason I didnt quit 10 minutes into the class. I can definitely see some of the long term benefits of the workout.

In doing some research I found out that Bikram yoga, is used by athletes like Kobe Bryant, Elton Brand, The Williams Sisters, and David Duval if golf counts as a sport. The sesions arent too expensive and there is little to no pressure to compete with others in the class. This makes it especially good for people who arent in good physical condition.  Based on my initial session, I’d strongly recommend Bikram Yoga for everyone except black girls with weave….

Maybe after a few months of Bikram Yoga, I too will be able to dunk.

Handbags and Broccoli….Where to find produce in the city…

I recently moved to Washington, DC and I’ve had a difficult time finding produce that was fresh and affordable. The local grocery stores produce section has fruit/vegetables in such bad condition that I’m sure, most of them have some type of agricultural STD. Apparently, my preidicament is common  for people who live in major urban areas without access to a Trader Joes or the funds to shop at a Whole Foods.

Apparently even oranges can get chlaymdia...

With this in mind I decided to write a post on where to find good produce in your local city.

Farmers Market-Most cities across the U.S. have a farmers market, that is full of ripe, fresh, and maybe organic produce. In the District of Columbia you have Eastern Market and you have the DC Farmer’s Market both full of fresh produce and other grocery items.

You can even find that Louis Vuitton purse you’ve been craving ladies.                

Eastern Market...the only reason to come to SE DC if you're not black or gay...

Fruit Stands- fruit stands are a great way to buy local produce for the yuppie on a budget or living in poverty like myself. While the selection may not be as varied as what you would find at a farmers market,  the fruit quality is often seasonal, local, and fresh.

Buying from fruit stands helps support your local economy and illegal immigrant community...J/K

Community Supported Agriculture- has become very popular over the last couple of years with pretentious yuppies like myself for a variety of reasons. CSA’s offer seasonal local food to members who purchase a subscription. Typically the subscriber will recieve a box weekly or biweekly of fresh vegetables and sometimes other farm products. One small disadvantaged of CSA’s is that you get a lot of atypical vegetables, however this is easily countered because it forces you to learn new styles of cooking and expand your pallate.

You've heard of male genitalia in a box, now you have veggies in a box...STDs optional.

As you can see it is possible to get fresh quality produce if you leave in major city, without spending an arm and a leg. Hopefully, this will help out all those people looking for alternatives to the local grocery store.
